Surif Women's Cooperative: Palestinian Embroidery
Um Mu2men, one of the two women that run this small Tatreez cooperative In Surif, video called me and stayed on the phone with me for the full 35 minutes, watching the road to make sure I take the right way and don’t accidentally drive into any settlements. Then she had her 12 year old son meet me at a nearby village and take me to the cooperative. There, I met Halimeh, who’s been working at the cooperative for almost twenty years and who personally oversees every single embroidery piece that comes out of the cooperative, which she washes, puts the finishing touches on and and irons. Her patience with me, the fragrant lemon tree and the opportunity to dig through new and old tatreez treasures made it all worth it.
