Kilim Oasis Rug
The kilims are woven in Fowwa, a village located in the fertile Nile Delta. The artisans who create them belong to a long lineage of craftsmen who regard this craft as an essential part of their heritage. Decades ago, Fowwa was home to over 2,000 kilim weaving workshops; however, by 2016, fewer than 200 remained. With the craft nearing extinction within Egypt's cultural heritage, efforts were made to redesign its value chain, with the goal of bringing this traditional art into the 21st century and ensuring its sustainability for the future.
This piece is inspired by the desert's simplicity. The desert, with its dry, vast, and quiet expanses, offers a neutral yet striking color palette. In its struggle to thrive, the desert has formed tones, textures, and shapes that showcase its majesty. These landscapes dominate much of Egypt, making them integral to ttheirĀ national identity. The artisans behind this product earn fair wages while preserving Egyptian cultural heritage through a craft passed down through generations, supporting the revival and sustaining local crafts, empowering these communities.
